Understanding how phagocytes control phagosome fate and pathogen killing

Neutrophils and macrophages engulf and digest prey into membrane bound vesicles called phagosomes. Failure of phagosome maturation causes infection, inflammation and persistence of undegraded material.

We want to understand: 

  1. How do phagocytes control phagosome maturation?
  2. How do they adapt this to different prey?
  3. How does phagosome processing change the overall immune response?

Research interests

Muir lab is interested in understanding how phagocytes kill and digest different micro-organisms with the ultimate aim of developing new drugs that could be used to resolve inflammation and persistent infections.

  1. Understanding how phosphatidylinositol lipids control phagosome maturation in neutrophils and macrophages.
  2. Identifying host signaling pathways that could be used to improve pathogen killing in hard-to-treat infections.
